HYPERPIGMENTATION

Are suffering from hyperpigmentation ?

Hyperpigmentation of the skin is caused by an increase in melanin , a substance in the body that is responsible for color (pigment) .
A common form of hyperpigmentation is melasma , where the skin develops brown spots in areas that have been exposed to the sun . Pregnancy and the intake of birth control pills can also cause this condition to develop and sun exposure can worsen it .
Anyone can be prone to hyperpigmentation but there is a higher incidence among women with darker skin . For pregnant women the condition is often referred to as the ‘ mask of pregnancy ’ and may reverse when the pregnancy is over and also , if birth control pills are stopped.
But for others , the condition can be a stubborn and persistent problem .

SO WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ?

HYDROQUINONE -
A common topical treatment for hyperpigmentation . You can find over-the-counter products that contain 2% hydroquinone (the maximum currently allowed for over-the-counter products) but your dermatologist can prescribe a stronger dose of 4%, which could be more effective , if your skin requires it.

RETINOIDS , GLYCOLIC , SALICYLIC -
These topical treatments can cause side effects of skin irritation , burning , itching and redness so you need to determine if your skin can tolerate these ingredients and also you need to apply these products for several months before seeing any improvements .

KOJIC ACID -
A mushroom extract which has been used in products to lighten the skin , but results can vary and it can also result in skin irritation .

CHEMICAL PEELS -
Peels that contain glycolic or salicylic acid work by exfoliating the upper-most layer of your skin and the dark area with it but there could be side effects , including irritation or discoloration of the skin .

MICRODERMABRATION –
Fine crystals are sprayed on your skin . It works like a chemical peel by removing the upper layer of the skin and the area with brown spots . Like chemical peels , there could be side effects to this treatment.

LASER TREATMENTS -
To the extent other therapies are more effective , but these can be costly and they may not be effective in the long-term .

Regular use of sunscreen to prevent the reappearance of spots or development of new ones .
From the research I have done , hyperpigmentation can be difficult to treat and sun exposure can quickly trigger its reappearance .
